The Australian town that kicked the bottle

Plastic bottles were ceremoniously removed from shelves in the sleepy Australian town of Bundanoon on the weekend as a ban on commercially-bottled water, believed to be a world first, came into force.

Canada Bans BPA From Baby Bottles

Canada yesterday became the first country to ban a widely found chemical from use in baby bottles, spurring a leading Democrat in the U.S. Senate to call for legislation that would prohibit use of bisphenol A, or BPA, in a number of everyday consumer products.

"We have immediately taken action on bisphenol A because we believe it is our responsibility to ensure families, Canadians and our environment are not exposed to a potentially harmful chemical," Tony Clement, the minister of health, said in a statement.

More information should be given to parents about a controversial chemical found in most plastic baby bottles, the National Childbirth Trust has said.

American scientists last month raised concerns about Bisphenol A, or BPA, which they say could cause behavioural changes and the early onset of puberty.
